It's All About People - 30th January 2025

๐Ÿ’ฌ Itโ€™s Time to Talk: Prioritising Mental Health at Work

READ TIME - 3 minute read

Mental health is such an important topic, and like a lot of people, I have seen close family members really struggle with poor mental health. I also suffered (and that is the right word) with Post Natal Depression back in 2007 and 2008.

As an HR Professional I feel really strongly that prioritising wellbeing of team members and providing a positive work culture should be at the top of the list. Not just because it is the right thing to do, but also the benefits for organisations are HUGE.

My last employed role before I started Gateway HR, was an HR Manager for the UKโ€™s largest group of Mental Health hospitals, and I learnt so much from my clinical colleagues while I worked there. Some techniques and knowledge I still use today; almost 20 years on!

When we run Mental Health Champions training for clients, they all get a badge to wear at work so people know who they are.

Mental health matters, and Time to Talk Day on 6th February is the perfect opportunity to open up conversations about mental health in your workplace. ๐ŸŒŸ

According to recent studies, employees who feel supported in their mental health are:
โœ… 42% more likely to stay at their job
โœ… 5x more engaged
โœ… Twice as likely to recommend their workplace to others

Despite this, many employees still feel uncomfortable discussing mental health at work.

3 Ways to Make Mental Health a Priority

โœ… Create a Safe Space:
Encourage open dialogue by letting employees know itโ€™s okay to talk about mental health. Use Time to Talk Day to promote resources like Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) or signpost external support - we always recommend Work in Confidence (let me know if you would like more details).

โœ… Train Your Managers:
Equip line managers with the tools they need to spot signs of mental health struggles and have supportive conversations. A little empathy goes a long way.

โœ… Embed Mental Health in Your Culture:
Promote wellbeing by normalising regular check-ins, flexible working, and small breaks to reduce stress. Simple initiatives like these make a big difference!

๐Ÿ’ก Top Tip: Use Time to Talk Day as a springboard for year-round mental health initiatives.
