As many of you know, our family have ben big fans of women’s football for well over a decade now. Our daughter played her first match when she was 6 years old and played for many years (before swapping to rugby so next months Women’s Rugby World cup is also exciting.)

It is great to see how the sport is progressing. When they won in 2022, 7000 went to their victory parade, this year it was 65,000 😀/

You don’t need to be a football fan to feel inspired by the Lionesses’ incredible Euros win this week. 🏆

It was a masterclass in resilience, unity, and leadership – both on and off the pitch.

Sarina Wiegman didn’t just lead a team to victory. She built a culture of calm confidence, mutual respect, and total belief. The kind of culture that every workplace leader aspires to – and the kind that doesn’t just happen by chance.

Because the truth is, great teams don’t just magically work. They’re built. Piece by piece.
With:

• Clear goals

• Trust in each other’s strengths

• Support when things go wrong

• And leadership that leads with the team, not just above it.

But let’s be honest too.

While the headlines rightly celebrated the win, it’s deeply disappointing to see the racist and sexist abuse that has followed. It’s a stark reminder of the work still needed – not just in sport, but in every workplace, every organisation, every team.

As employers and HR professionals, we can shape cultures that are different.
Cultures that champion diversity.
That call out harmful behaviour.
That make every person feel safe and valued.

The Lionesses have shown what’s possible when we work together – with focus, determination, and care for one another.

Let’s do the same.
