New schools, empty nests – and small acts that matter

It’s not just the children who need support this September

Over the next few weeks, emotions will be running high in many households.

🎓 Some will be deciding what to do post GCSE or A Level results day
🎒 Others will be preparing for the first day of school or the move to “big school”
🪁 And a few will be facing the bittersweet reality of an empty nest, as their child heads off to university

It’s a time of big transitions – but not just for children. For the parents and carers in your team, these next few weeks can bring a mix of pride, worry, guilt, excitement, and stress.

And while we can’t take that rollercoaster away – we can show that we see them.

Small, thoughtful adjustments can make a big difference:

  • Letting someone start late so they can do the first school drop-off

  • An erly finish to pick up from first day(s) at school to hear all about it

  • Giving a quiet nod of support to a team member who’s just waved their child off to university and perhaps buying a coffee and just having a chat

  • Flexibility during phased starts at primary schools – which can involve short days or only part-time attendance for the first week or more

These aren’t major operational changes. But they show your team that you care about the things that matter most to them.

It’s not just a good HR move – it’s a human one.
